Wye Valley Adventure Trail Riding

The Wye Valley - designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Monmouth, our base is a Welsh border market town situated at the confluence of the Rivers Wye, Monnow and Trothy. With its bustling streets full of pubs & restaurants it makes a great place to stay for an adventure trail riding weekend.

The Riverside Hotel. Originally a 19th coaching inn the Riverside is now a busy 19 bedroom hotel offering the perfect combination of market-town energy and rural loveliness with friendly, professional service and value, making it an ideal location for a ‘relaxing break’. The parking is very good as is the hearty breakfast.

We will arrive on the Friday and stay at the hotel on Friday & Saturday nights on a bed and breakfast basis. The guided trail riding will be on Saturday & Sunday, leaving the hotel at 9:30am both days FUELED ready for the day.

Leaving the hotel on Saturday morning heading south on the road, the first lane is just 2.25 miles away. Straight into the woods on a tricky uphill ancient lane ‘Welcome to Wales’. It feels like you are in the woods all day so the weather does not seem to be a big factor. Great views across Sheperdine sands, River Severn as you approach Park Hill. Stopping for lunch at the Wye Valley Hotel at Tintern a bike friendly pub with a warm welcome. Leaving the pub up a cracking narrow lane just around the corner takes you back up a steep hill and skirting around Hale Woods, finally descending to a great view of Tinten Abbey. Heading south west out of Tintern towards Porthcasseg on one of my favourite technical lanes (a great photo opportunity if you are leading) and onto Chepstow for fuel. It pretty much due north all the way back to Monmouth taking in some classic lanes, including one that runs in the bottom of a stream & an old coal road.

Sunday takes us much further south west as far as Newport, taking in a decent of the famous ‘Pant-Glas’ steps as used in the ‘Wyegate Trial’ the clip is going up! A long section through some deep muddy woods and later in the day some of the lanes in reverse from the day before (if we have the energy). The woods east of the Narth are more like the ‘Romaniacs’ when ridden in reverse but a great challenge & team building opportunity! Please don’t let this put you off, we can go round.
